Breaking: U.S. Online Gambling Laws to be relaxed
In a move that hinting at a reversal of the 2006 Draconian bill, Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act, the Department of Justice has said that this will be now reviewed.
Many believed at the time it was a crazy move that stifled business and made criminals of legitimate companies.
Many big online gambling companies had to pay huge fines to the U.S. ,Domain names and websites were taken and suspended in some cases.
Indeed some high profile executives of betting companies were fined huge sums and even imprisoned;
Anurag Dikshit
Indian co-founder of PartyGaming. Admitted US gambling offences in 2008; agreed $300m settlement.
Gary Kaplan
American founder of BetonSports. Sentenced to four years in 2009 for running illegal offshore betting.
David Carruthers
British CEO of BetonSports. Sentenced to 33 months after agreeing to testify against Kaplan.
Brent Beckley
American co-founder of Absolute Poker. Jailed this month after anFBI-led swoop on card-playing sites.
This should allow more money to be made by companies and hopefully punters alike. Shares in online gaming and betting companies surged yesterday on the news.
I’m not sure whether the lobbyists from the offline casino’s have less sway with President Obama? He publicly shares his love of poker and his regular use of the internet. Maybe he has decided this makes a lot of sense and a way to improve one area of the economy. Although all the old lobbyists and the war machine still manage to use Obama as a puppet, so maybe not. Maybe just commonsense was seen on what was a ridiculous rule.
Hopefully things will be a lot more straight forward for developers who want to go ahead and develop some of their prime online real estate now who are stateside or wanting some of the huge base of U.S Gambling traffic.
The bods at the D.O.J seem to interprate the law now to say non-sports are okay to be gambled on online. So Lotteries, Poker etc.
This could be a much welcome shot in the arm for states who need to raise cash from new revenue sources.
Either way, fingers crossed everyone gets a lot more enquiries for their gambling .com’s! Us included!
