Facebook buy ‘FB.com’ domain for $8.5 million

Facebook has shelled out $8.5 million for the 2 letter domain name FB.com

The seller is the Farm Bureau of America which operates it’s main site at www.fb.org

The Farm Bureau allegedly paid just $200,000 for the domain  from the previous owner a couple of years ago, however I am sure I read years ago they were left their .org by a donor.

At its annual meeting in Atlanta, the non-profit, Farm Bureau, revealed that it earned $8.5 million on the sale of fb.com, according to Reuters.

They actually stated they sold two domains for this sum but weren’t allowed to reveal the buyer. However it doesn’t need much working out!

The main interest Zuckerberg and Facebook have is brand protection (even though FB is generic and can be used for many acronyms), a short direct navigation address. Just a few key strokes. And also as emails for staff. eg: mark@fb.com

They are now offering for facebook members yourname@facebook.com , so this was a smart move for facebook and a healthy cash injection for the Farm Bureau.

Congrats all round.
