MoneySupermarket acquires prime financial domains for £4.6 Million

MoneySupermarket.com has purchased some of the best  insurance and financial .co.uk domain names on the market  for  £4.6 Million.

This is the minimum price paid, as depending on performance, the price can rise to £9 Million as part of the deal.

Although Money Supermarket are a big brand in themselves as the leading finacial price comparison site in the UK, they clearly understand the power, memorability and branding potential of top end generic domain names.

Moneysupermarket said the acquisition would provide “a platform for the group to broaden its brand offering to a wider range of customer segments in the money and insurance (divisions)”.

The domain names and sites they purchases from FinancialServices.co.uk were:

Mortgages.co.uk     Investments.co.uk     CreditCards.co.uk     LifeInsurance.co.uk    HealthInsurance.co.uk   CarFinance.co.uk

Savings.co.uk   OnlineLoans.co.uk   HomeInsurance.co.uk

Of course these were developed sites bringing in an income but it is the the pure generic nature and the trust factor that these powerful domain names bring that will have attracted MS to purchase these names.

Even undeveloped these domain names would have brought a stream of targetted traffic, developed of course the traffic rate will be far higher. I would expect MS to redevelop all of these sites over time, using some of the original content but branding up each site under their main umbrella.
